Layers of Support
This course is designed to give you a core of knowledge, but to really understand the cardinal movements and how to assess them, you need to actually attend births with a qualified mentor.
Once you have graduated and understand fetal positioning, you still need mentors and team members, and these layers of support for all those births that aren’t butter births.
My layers of support include:
- The people that attend births with me - colleagues, students, assistants. I lean on them for ideas, critiques of my ideas, and for time off. It doesn't really matter how you share call, just share it!
- The people who keep the practice running - office manager, administrative assistant, billing manager, receptionist, etc. If youre doing this all yourself, I sure hope youre paying yourself for the second job you have.
- I also always create ‘house mother’ roles in my practice - no matter if its home or birth center. This could be a cleaning crew or even a paid student position - but someone who takes care of cleaning instruments, washing laundry, and taking out garbage, and all the details during and after the birth that aren’t clinical.
- The next layer is who is going to catch me when I come home exhausted - partner, house-mate, best friend. And/or house cleaner, meal delivery service, or babysitter. (It is cruel and usual punishment to come home from a night or two without sleep and be expected to effectively watch children).
- My next layer of support is my body workers. Holding other people’s weight and/or massaging them for hours creates stress and pain, as well as the stress we just hold in our bodies as birth workers, can not be allowed to stay. SO, my massage therapist, chiropractor, acupuncturist, reiki therapist, etc are all in my layers of support (they are also all tax right offs if you own your own biz) - for more check out our “Birth Business Masterclass” it starts Feb 1st.
- And lastly, all my friends who are not birth workers are a layer of support for me - shopping, brunching, camping, and just giggling about life with people you don't see professionally is an important part of sustainability! You need a mental break to keep doing this!
You will have a better life if you build in layers of support, but you will also safe guard your longevity. This is beautiful work, don't be one of the hordes who leave the profession because of burn-out.
And if you can’t figure out how to make enough money to pay for these layers, then you need business coaching! Hint: we offer this service too! Click here to schedule
